“Save the Date” Custom Design | 2019

5” Square Cards with Gold Foil Stamping, Hand Assembled Envelopes, and Custom Heat Foiled Liners

For this design suite, the goal was to create something that felt modern and clean, with just a touch of vintage glamor. With the wedding date planned for the first weekend of the new decade, the celebration would bring us into the “twenties” of this century. I wanted to give a subtle nod to the Art Deco aesthetic that’s so prevalent in our cultural nostalgia for the “Roaring Twenties” of the last century.

Typography: For the main text elements I chose to pair a dramatically letter-spaced, lowercase Adobe Garamond Pro with an equally dramatically letter-spaced all-caps Gill Sans. The intention was to create an airy blend of classic and modern typographic styles. I chose to set the foil stamped numeric characters in Brilon as a subtle callback to the decorative, formal flair of Art Deco typography.

Pattern: With the fairly minimalist, clean design of the Save the Date cards themselves, the envelope liner provided the perfect opportunity to incorporate some of the lavishly intricate patterning so reminiscent of the Art Deco aesthetic. The repeating linear arch and star pattern, heat foiled on the cream colored paper, was a modern take on the vintage style design. I chose to use a light ground rather than classic black to bring this design into the twenty-first century. The lightness also provided visual continuance with the white space of the card design and referenced the white motif of the wedding.

Print + Assembly: The cards were printed and cut at Air Graphics in Quincy, MA on 100 lb matte stock with gold foil stamping. The envelopes were printed on 24 lb Neena Tortilla with my own Brother laser printer, die cut with a Cricut Explore Air 2, and hand assembled. The liners were printed on 24 lb Neena Birch using the same laser printer, and heat foiled using a Heidi Swap heat foiling machine.
